Nursing Practice-Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Paper

Describe the topic or issue in nursing practice that you selected and explain why.

The issue of interest is suicide prevention in adolescents. Although nurses have a high level of direct and continuous contact with suicidal adolescents within the hospital environment, there is a need to understanding the nursing care needs of this population outside the hospital environment with a focus on preventing suicides (Sisler et al., 2020). It is anticipated that the end of the study will affirm the important of and investment in delivering human caring, personalized interactions combined with nurses accompaniment across daily living situations as well as during acute suffering, illness and acute. The conclusion of the study is expected to highlight the role and contribution of nurses in creating a therapeutic milieu for the patients outside the hospital, and create a health-promoting environment in patient care and recovery (Rosenberg, 2017)Nursing Practice-Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Paper.

Explain which qualitative research design approach that you selected to address this topic or issue and describe the method you chose.

Phenomenology qualitative research design would be appropriate for answering the research question in a research study. This is a research design that collects information to explain why the study participants experience the phenomenon and how they feel about it. This design recognizes that there is no single objective reality. Rather, different persons can have different experiences of the same phenomenon. To be more precise, the design recognizes that although the adolescents may have the same suicide ideation, their reasons for the ideation may differ. The research results are described from the perspective of the participants with the researcher able to derive findings from the outcomes and identify themes surrounding the phenomenon being studied (Grove & Gray, 2022)Nursing Practice-Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Paper.

Justify why this qualitative research design approach would be best suited for this topic or issue and explain how this approach will better inform improvements for nursing practice for the topic or issue that you selected.

As earlier indicated, phenomenology qualitative research design is appropriate for the issue of interest because it would describe and understand the essence of the issue. It investigates the everyday experiences of the participants while suspending any preconceived assumptions about the issue. In essence, it studies the lived experiences of adolescents with suicidal ideation to gain deeper insights into how they understand their experiences. The assumption is that the research participants will use a universal essence/structure to make sense of their experiences. This enables the researcher to interpret the participants’ beliefs, perceptions and feelings to clarify the essence of the issue being investigated. In simpler terms, this research design is used to understand the universal nature of suicide prevention in adolescent populations by exploring the experiences of adolescents who have experienced this issue. With this approach, it is possible to study the lived experiences of the population of interest, gain a deeper understanding of how they think, and expand knowledge about the issue of suicide prevention in adolescents (Grove & Gray, 2022)Nursing Practice-Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Paper.

Explain why it is important for the DNP-prepared nurse to understand qualitative research approaches for nursing practice.

It is important for the DNP prepared nurses to understand qualitative research approaches. These approaches address the how and why research questions, thus providing a deeper understanding of the context, phenomenon and experiences. In fact, it allows them to ask research questions concerning human experiences that cannot be easily put into numbers. Using qualitative research approaches to understand every realities of social phenomenon would help in extending nursing knowledge and understanding. In addition, it helps them in comprehending the assumptions behind the approaches that would then be applied in conducting research. They help the research decide whether to have a contributing role or be an objective researcher, and guide whether to ask the same question to participants or to evolve the questions between participants. This helps the nurse in doing things right. Besides that, it helps the nurse in getting published by meeting the scientific process requirements as set by reviewers, editors and examiners. Additionally, it helps the nurse in understanding other research publications, such as knowing what the results imply and where a previous research may have failed (Cleland, 2017)Nursing Practice-Suicide Prevention in Adolescents Paper.
